Trauma Therapy

Has Trauma Robbed You Of Your Sense Of Safety?
Have you experienced something so painful or intense that you feel stuck in the past, unable to move forward on your own? Do you struggle with:
-
Anxiety, guilt, shame, low self-worth, or negative beliefs about yourself?
-
A fear of the unknown, the unfamiliar, or a recurrence of the traumatic event?
-
Anger management issues, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, or sleep disorders?
Perhaps you cry easily because tears are the only way your body knows how to channel your pain. Or maybe don’t know what’s going on, but you’re hoping trauma therapy can provide you with some answers and support.
Trauma Can Present A Spectrum Of Challenges
On a physical level, it can cause headaches, nausea, shallow breathing, and muscle tension. The stress of worrying and mentally prepping for the worst leaves you mentally and emotionally drained. When you try to advocate for yourself, you may freeze up or get your words caught in your throat.
You might find yourself helplessly projecting insecurities and fears onto your partner, creating tension in your relationship. Or you deny yourself opportunities for joy and exclude yourself from family and friends, fueling a self-perpetuating cycle of isolation and suffering.
At SolRiver Mindfulness Counseling, we want you to know that you can take your life back from trauma and PTSD. Getting grounded, cultivating positive cognitions, and becoming aware of how the body expresses trauma empowers you with the ability to choose how you respond to symptoms, your inner critic, and any future challenges.

Many People Endure Trauma, Yet It’s Widely Misunderstood
Everyone encounters adversity in life, but for many people, their experiences have a more painful and enduring impact. Although millions of individuals struggle with trauma every day, it’s still not very well understood. Most people think it results solely from catastrophic events. However, trauma can arise from smaller events or experiences that, for some reason, make the body feel unsafe.
It’s also not fully realized just how much trauma adversely affects an individual’s ability to cope with everyday stressors, maintain relationships, manage work obligations, etc. Instead, they’re often told to get over it and move on. So, our society isn’t really equipped to provide the validation and support people deserve, which is why the need for trauma treatment is so great.

People Often Face Unseen Barriers To Trauma Counseling
A trauma response occurs because the body and brain no longer know the difference between the past and the present, so it often leaves people feeling stuck and overwhelmed. It’s often complicated by denial, fear, and/or a lack of understanding regarding what trauma is. Other folks simply don’t know that their suffering stems from past experiences, such as childhood trauma, that therapy could treat.
That’s why working with a trauma therapist is so beneficial. It offers you validation, a greater understanding of trauma, and practical strategies for finding immediate relief and making long-term changes. Our trauma counselors want to give you a chance to uncover the roots of your pain and discover true healing for your mind, body, and spirit.
Trauma Therapy Is Solely About You And Your Unique Healing Journey
Trauma and PTSD affect people physically, emotionally, and neurologically, so it can be difficult to self-assess and take steps toward healing on your own, which is where therapy comes in. Working with a trauma specialist gives you clarity and options for how you decide to respond to distress.
It helps you move out of survival mode to a place where everything isn’t a matter of life and death—a place where you can finally feel safe and breathe for a moment. Trauma counseling also gives you space to express yourself, embrace who you are, and discover what you need to feel fulfilled and get unstuck.
What Do My Trauma Therapy Sessions Entail?
The direction our sessions take is entirely up to you. There is no right or wrong way to go about therapy, so we can talk about whatever feels urgent or right for you in the moment. If you have an agenda, perfect. If you want to do things organically and take it day by day, that’s fine too. Our job is to find the best way to help you move through whatever you are experiencing.
Oftentimes, that involves looking at the past to see how it is informing your current situation. We may use journaling, visualization, or mindfulness/breathing exercises to improve emotional regulation. Throughout the process, I’ll track your progress and adjust things to make sure the approach we’re using works best for you.

Some Of The Tools We Frequently Use In Trauma Treatment

We believe in taking a holistic, mind-body approach to PTSD and trauma treatment that utilizes three powerful therapy methods to provide healing on multiple levels.
-
Talk Therapy is how we start to process things and get the ball rolling. Trauma-focused talk therapy puts language to your experiences and what you are releasing as you are doing Brainspotting and somatic work.
-
Brainspotting for Trauma and PTSD is a neurobiological process that draws upon the mind/body connection, allowing the body to release the trauma it is storing as a result of a traumatic experience. By tapping into the central nervous system, Brainspotting fosters relief on a psychological, emotional, and physical level. Similar to EMDR therapy for trauma, which is largely clinician-driven, Brainspotting is a somatic approach that is client-led and more attuned to the individual.
-
Somatic Therapy is a body-centric approach to trauma counseling that focuses on the mind-body connection. It often utilizes mindfulness, physical movement, and breathing exercises to unlock and release trauma stored in the body without having to rehash all the details of what happened.
Once you begin to understand trauma and process your experiences through Talk Therapy, Brainspotting, and Somatic work, you can start to make conscious shifts in your perspective.
You can feel less triggered and vulnerable and more secure in yourself and your surroundings because you’re no longer trapped in a trauma response. As a result, you can enjoy a greater sense of well-being, safety, and agency over what you want your life to look like.
Perhaps You’re Considering Trauma Therapy But Have A Few Concerns…
?How do I know if trauma counseling could benefit me
There are many reasons why you might benefit from therapy. Generally feeling unhappy in life, having difficulty in relationships, feeling stuck, and searching for a sense of purpose are all poignant reasons to seek support. Remember, trauma comes in all shapes and sizes, meaning there is no problem too small for counseling. So if you feel like you want more out of life and are working really hard, but you can’t get anywhere on your own, we encourage you to reach out for help.
I worry that talking about my experience may be retraumatizing.
That’s completely understandable. However, once you have an opportunity to share what you are going through in a safe environment, the pain starts to subside because you don’t have to hold onto it anymore. Plus, Brainspotting and Somatic Therapy are both great workarounds that allow us to tackle trauma on a neurobiological and physical level without having to discuss the traumatic event in detail.
How long will I have to be in trauma treatment?
Everyone is different and has their own timetable for healing. However, our job is to create a customized treatment plan that offers you sustainable relief as quickly as possible. We’ll help you develop an awareness of your body and equip you with various coping strategies for managing symptoms and triggers. We’ll also monitor your progress, review goals with you, and make adjustments so you’re getting the most out of sessions. Moreover, targeting trauma cognitively (Talk Therapy), physically (Somatic Therapy), and neurobiologically (Brainspotting) often takes less time than traditional treatment models alone.
